Verve Records is home to the world’s largest jazz catalogue, including recordings by Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Stan Getz, Bill Evans, and Billie Holiday, but it’s also the home of more left-of-center records outside the jazz sphere from the likes of the Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa, Kurt Vile, and Arooj Aftab. For this celebration of the label’s 70th anniversary, Verve invites Christian McBride, a world-class bassist and bandleader, a Juilliard graduate and 11-time GRAMMY winner who has recorded with legends of both the jazz (McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Palmieri, and more) and pop (Sting, Paul McCartney, Celine Dion) spheres. He’s joined by Mei Semones, an American indie rock musician who writes jazz-influenced songs in both English and Japanese, who has invited her own crew of friends to perform music from Getz/Gilberto, the classic collaborative album by João Gilberto and Stan Getz released on Verve in 1964. More guests are to be announced.
