Nuyorican legends Tony Vega and George Lamond are bringing their freestyle and swinging salsa vibes to SummerStage. Vega got his start on the island in a teen rock band called City Trash before falling in love with tropical Afro-Caribbean rhythms, working with Raphy Levitt’s la Selecta and Willie Rosario. He moved to New York in 1986, teaming up with Louie Ramírez and later, Eddie Palmieri. His 1991 solo album Yo Me Quedo remains a romantic salsa classic. George Lamond was born in D.C. but quickly moved to Puerto Rico; by 7 years old he was in the Bronx, where he came of age in the 1970s. In 1999, when the likes of Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony were scoring crossover hits in English, Lamond broke through with the salsa throwback Entrega, which went gold on the back of its smash single “Que Te Vas.” But he’s best known for his debut 1989 single “Bad of the Heart,” a definitive freestyle classic. They’re joined by the local Bronx-based DJ collective Uptown Vinyl Supreme, which pays homage to hip-hop’s roots with all-vinyl sets that embody the spirit of the art form.
