The nimble-tongued Afro-colombian rapper Gabylonia and Puerto Rico’s Rafa Pabón and Jay Wheeler led this showcase of rising urbano stars. The fiercely militant Gabylonia spits politically charged lyrics with a rapid fire flow, eschewing frivolous hooks for bars upon bars of dope lyrics. Pabón is a conservatory-educated reggaetonero equally adept at rapping for merengue; he also dropped the anti-police brutality screed “Sin Aire” this summer. They’re joined by Jay Wheeler, the boricua romántico who this year cut the collaborative record Platónicos with mentor DJ Nelson, one of reggaetón’s founding fathers.
