Pete Rock, aka Soul Brother #1, helped pioneer the fusion of jazz, funk, and soul with rap, and is responsible for some of the most iconic productions in New York hip-hop. He first made his name in the early 90’s as one half of the critically acclaimed group Pete Rock & CL Smooth, but it was Rock’s productions and remixes for other groundbreaking artists such as Nas, Common, and Slick Rick that secured his place in hip-hop history. As a solo artist, his LP Soul Survivor cemented a template that continues to be mined for inspiration by the likes of Kanye West, Alchemist, and many more. As his legend continues to grow, the SummerStage veteran (2018) brings his live band The Soul Brothers to SummerStage Anywhere, where they’ll tackle the monumental task of bringing his intricate productions to life in a live setting. They’re joined by Buddy, a nascent rapper from Compton, California, whose 2018 debut LP Harlan & Alondra paints a diverse picture of his hometown, celebrating blackness in the face of oppression.
