VP Records has been a bastion and conduit of Jamaican music in New York City since its inception. Founded in Jamaica, Queens in 1977 with roots reaching back to Kingston, the story of the label is woven into the story of Jamaican music itself, from ska to rocksteady to reggae to dub to dancehall. The label returns to SummerStage with a showcase featuring a review of Jamaican artists making “roots reggae,” a subgenre rooted in spirituality, liberation, and revolution. They include Anthony B, a high-energy performer and iconic artist who, for decades, has promoted peace in his music; the Brooklyn-born Chuck Fender, the “Poor People Defenda” known for “Afromantic” songs glorifying Black women; the five-piece reggae band F.Y.A.H., comprised of former members of Raging Fyah, whose 2016 LP Everlasting cracked the top 2 on Billboard’s reggae chart; Blvk H3ro, a rising singer who has collaborated with Bunny Wailer, UB40, and Equiknoxx, and who maintains an unwavering focus on uplifting Jamaica’s youth; and the American reggae band Soul Rebel Project, two-time winners of the Boston Music Awards’ International Artist of the Year. With support from Jamrock Stars and Empress Breeze.
