For a moment in the late 80s and early 90s, the Staten Island-based R&B group Force M.D.s swirled doo-wop harmonies with hip-hop beats into hits like “Tender Love,” featured in the seminal hip-hop movie Krush Groove, and “Love is a House,” which hit #1 on the R&B charts. But the group was also touched by tragedy—four of its original members suffered early deaths. This year the group’s surviving members—Rodney “Khalil” Lundy, Stevie D., and Zieme—celebrate founding member Jesse Lee Daniels, who passed earlier this year. The Force M.Ds—”MD” stands for “Musical Diversity”—celebrate the group’s music and influence with the help of WBLS DJs S-1 and Bugsy Buggs.
