Shabaka Hutchings is arguably the brightest star in a surging London jazz scene. He’s spent the last few years helming various projects; since joining the Impulse! label, he’s Your Queen Is a Reptile with the Sons of Kemet and Trust In The Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery The Comet Is Coming. His latest project is with the Ancestors, a group assembled from South African players that helps marry Hutchings’ Afro-Caribbean roots with Hugh Masekela’s township jazz. Their latest LP, We Were Sent Here by History, narrates the apocalypse from a distant future, providing a glimmer of hope of rebuilding atop the ashes.
