Tuareg singer/songwriter and guitarist Mdou Moctar emerged from his small village in Niger with a distinct, self-taught playing style, infusing African influences with psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll. His viral success in West Africa’s cell phone-trading network—where villagers swap songs via Bluetooth and SIM cards—took him around the world and drew like-minded musicians into his orbit. He’s joined by Meg Baird, a masterful guitarist with a willowy voice, and Mary Lattimore, a musician and composer who wields effects pedals and synthesizers to modernize the harp for contemporary tastes. The two will perform works from their 2018 collaborative LP Ghost Forests. Rough Francis, a hard-edged Vermont rock band descended from the ‘70s proto-punk band Death, will open. dj.henri is on the ones and twos.
