It’s a Puerto Rican party on Staten Island, presented in association with the borough’s radio station Maker Park Radio, with a long running salsa band and WKTU’s Queen of Freestyle. La Sonora Ponceña is one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic salsa bands, known for their powerful brass arrangements, masterful piano solos, and high-energy performances. Since 1954, they’ve played a key role in shaping the sound of salsa across Latin America and beyond, and have since recorded dozens of albums, recently celebrating their 55th anniversary. Today, the band is directed by Quique’s son, Papo Lucca, who first started crashing his dad’s band practice when he was just five years old. Bronx born powerhouse singer Judy Torres, known as the “Queen of Freestyle” to her loyal fans, cracked the Billboard dance chart with her 1989 debut single “No Reason to Cry”; after releasing two studio albums, she’s been the on-air host of WKTU’s Freestyle Free for All! for two decades. Her one-woman show “No Reason to Cry” debuted to rave reviews at the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater in 2018. Also performing is Linda EPO, a Queens native whose vibrant, multilingual performances span jazz, funk, R&B, Caribbean, and Latin music. They’re joined by DJ Milo on the 1s and 2s, spinning hits in between sets.
