Jose Alberto “El Canario,” is a Dominican salsa singer and master improviser from Puerto Rico. With Tipica ’73, Alberto worked with the likes of Johnny Rodriquez, Sonny Bravo, Mario Rivera, Leopoldo Pineda, Nicky Marrero, and Alfredo de la Fe before forming his own band in 1983. In the early ‘90s, he helped popularize salsa romantica with his solo LP Dance With Me. Machito, Tito Rodriguez, and Tito Puente are three titans of Latin jazz and mambo, helping define the sound of dance music in 1950s New York. Machito helped refine Afro-Cuban jazz and was instrumental in the foundation of Cubop and salsa music; Puerto Rican bandleader and percussionist Tito Rodriguez, also known as “El Inolvidable” (The Unforgettable One), was the biggest name in town in the ‘50s save for Tito Puente, the legendary percussionist and mambo maestro who got his first break as Machito’s drummer, before going on to help mainstream mambo, son, and cha-cha-chá. All three musicians were at the vanguard of the mambo craze of the late ‘40s and ‘50s, and the Palladium Ballroom was its epicenter. Now, two of their sons—Tito Rodriguez Jr., and Machito Jr.,—take turns leading a 17-piece orchestra that includes original band members to perform their fathers’ greatest hits.
