Friday, August 2, 2019

6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Crotona Park

1700 Crotona Ave, The Bronx, 10457

The Crotona neighborhood of the Bronx has long been home to a thriving community of Garifuna, descendants of Afro-indigenous people from the Caribbean island of St Vincent who were exiled to the coast of Honduras in the eighteenth century. This SummerStage showcase features music and dance that celebrates the culture’s rich heritage, with performances by the Garifuna Collective, a seasoned group of musicians that spans generations, carrying the torch for their unique Afro-Amerindian cultural heritage, weaving soulful melodies with rhythms both indigenous and African; and by the Wabafu Garifuna Dance Theater, a Crotona-based company with an energetic show with live music that will be preceded by a free dance class in the Garifuna style.
