Glasgow’s Belle & Sebastian have come to embody the spirit—if not the origin—of twee, a precious style of indie pop punctuated by plucky chords and emotionally transparent narratives. Since their founding at a Glasgow college in the mid-90s, Stuart Murdoch & Co. released nearly a dozen LPs over the next three decades, growing from a government-funded project by shut-in dilettantes into one of the most recognizable indie pop bands in the world. Their latest album A Bit of Previous—their first in nearly 20 years to be recorded in their native Glasgow—is as big and loud as anything they’ve ever released. They’re joined by London five-piece Los Bitchos, an international group wielding Argentine cumbia, Peruvian chicha, and Turkish psych in service of an infectious retro sound.
