Even before they became the house band on the Tonight Show, The Roots were titans of hip-hop as the biggest, baddest, and best-known band in a genre not traditionally known for live instrumentation. Since its founding in Philadelphia in the late ‘80s by bandleader/drummer Questlove and MCs Black Thought and Malik B, the group has released nearly a dozen studio albums, won multiple GRAMMY awards, and taken their music across the world and back. They’ve been Jimmy Fallon’s house band since 2009, following him from Late Night to the Tonight Show in 2014. While the lineup has evolved over the years, it still features founding members Black Thought—widely recognized as one of the greatest rappers of all time—and Questlove, a pop culture icon who is one of the most influential figures in hip-hop and soul music over the last four decades. Their shows can feature surprise guests, extended jam sessions, and classic hits.
