Jessica Pratt’s style as a singer and songwriter is both gentle and understated, drawing on the spirit of ’70s psych-folk artists with not much more than an acoustic guitar and layered, reverb-heavy vocals. Her first recordings were so striking that her friend Tim Presley of the band White Fence started a label solely to release her music. The first copies sold out almost immediately, and she has toured the world opening for the likes of Real Estate and Julia Holter. Her latest LP Here in the Pitch (her fourth) sees her sound expanded to include bigger percussion, chamber pop instruments, and ethereal atmospherics that evoke the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds. She’s joined by Cameron Winter, frontman for the Brooklyn band Geese; his debut solo LP Heavy Metal is a noted departure from the guitar-heavy sounds of the band he started with his high-school buddies. His solo work showcases a warbling baritone on songs that ooze catharsis with a casual virtuosity.
