Ana Tijoux is a French-Chilean pop singer and rapper with a long history of championing social justice and nonviolence. She first started rapping and dancing at 11 years old, and did stints in the groups Los Tetas and Makiza before setting off on her own in 2006 with the single “Ya No Fue.” In 2009 she embraced hip-hop with her Grammy-nominated breakout LP 1977, which drew comparisons to DJ Premier’s work with Jeru the Damaja. She’s joined by Combo Chimbita, a New York-based group of Colombianos formed at world music incubator Barbes in Brooklyn. Self-proclaimed “Tropical Futurists,” they reach into the past to find the sounds of the future, with rhythms rooted in cumbia yet incorporating champeta, Afropop, calypso, dub, Haitian kompa, and even a little bit of Cape Verde’s space echo vibes.
