Before hip-hop went global, it was the sound of New York– soundtracking block parties, club nights, and college radio. The Originals have been there since nearly the beginning as a collection of rap DJs holding it down since before hip-pop became synonymous with pop. The quintet is still holding it down, spinning feel-good jams at parties that never seem to stop. They include Stretch Armstrong, of the beloved “Stretch And Bobbito” radio show; Clark Kent, who has produced classic records for the likes of Rakim, Jay-Z, and the Notorious B.I.G.; Rich Medina, who ran the legendary weekly dance institution APT; and Tony Touch, the b-boy turned DJ whose 50 MCs mixtapes became a Who’s Who of New York hip-hop in the 90s.
