In celebration of Max Roach 100, and in partnership with Jazzmobile, the legendary late jazz drummer will be honored with a performance by M’Boom and Horns led by Bobby Sanabria and Warren Smith. M’Boom, founded by Max Roach, an ensemble comprised completely of percussionists using marimba, xylophone, tympani, vibes, bells, gongs, and a musical saw in addition to drum sets. The original septet featured Roach, Warren Smith, Freddie Waits, Omar Clay, Joe Chambers, Roy Brooks, and Ray Mantilla; this tribute concert also features a performance lead by the talented young drummer Kojo Melché Roney, son to tenor saxophonist Antoine Roney and nephew to the late trumpeter Wallace Roney. His performance is dedicated to Max Roach’s contribution to the tradition of Jazz Drums as well as the impact that American drum tradition has on the world.
