The Afropop quartet Magic System has been known for high-energy performances and magical vibes since its founding in 1996 in Ivory Coast. Early hits include “Momo” from their debut album Papitou (1997) and “1er Gaou,” a remix of which, from French DJ & producer Bob Sinclar, helped break them in France and ultimately, throughout Europe—they would later crack Billboard’s European Top 100 with their 2006 LP Cessa Kié la Vérité. Their 2014 hit single ‘Magic in the Air” became a signature song of FIFA’s World Cup. They’re supported Burkinabe rapper Smarty, whose hit making lyrics focus on African issues, Mozambican singer Selma Uamusse, a rising star whose multiple talents span several sonorities from African music to soul and gospel, and Ivory Coast’s DJ Birane.
Selma Uamusse is presented in association with Arte Institute. For more information, visit www.arteinstitute.org.
