Coney Island Amphitheater
3052 W 21st St, Brooklyn, NY 11224
A celebration of 50 years of hip-hop curated by Special Ed, the prolific Brooklyn rapper whose biggest solo records were the hits “I Got It Made” and “Think About It.” In the ‘90s he linked up with Juice Crew MC Masta Ace and Boot Camp Clik MC Buckshot to form Crooklyn Dodgers and cut records for the Spike Lee movies Crooklyn and Clockers. Buckshot will also perform with his group Black Moon, whose 1992 hit “Who Got The Props?” catapulted them out of the underground. Nice N Smooth broke out with a guest feature on Big Daddy Kane’s “Pimpin Aint Easy,” but also topped the US rap charts with “Sometimes I Rhyme Slow.” Along with Pete Rock, CL Smooth is responsible for some of hip-hop’s foundational songs, including the bittersweet memorial “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.).” Rah Digga and Rampage will represent the Flipmode Squad, a group of animated and talented MCs that coalesced around Busta Rhymes. Queens rapper Sweet Tee, who broke out with “It’s My Beat” (with DJ Jazzy Joyce), and Brooklyn MC Sparky D, who made her name in the Roxanne Wars of the late ‘80s, hold it down for the women. With hosting duties handled by Ralph McDaniels, the NYC institution and host of the long-running public television show “Video Music Box.”
