Neo-funk band Galactic is joined by the Soul Queen of New Orleans Irma Thomas in this celebration of the music of the Big Easy in Central Park. For more than 25 years, Galactic has pushed the boundaries of funk music, collaborating with a diverse array of artists including Juvenile, Trombone Shorty, Z-Trip, Boots Riley, Macy Gray, Allen Toussaint, and Big Freedia. Their latest vocal collaborator is the powerhouse Jelly Joseph, who cut her teeth on Bourbon Street, American Idol, and with the GRAMMY-nominated band Tank and the Bangas. Joseph—along with many others—draws inspiration from Irma Thomas, a contemporary of Aretha Franklin and Etta James and a legend in her own right. A staple of New Orleans music for more than 50 years, she’s also previously collaborated with Galactic on their 2010 album Ya-Ka-May. They’re joined by GRAMMY-nominated Mardi Gras Indian funk band The Rumble, a New Orleans collective dedicated to preserving the past, present, and future of the city’s culture; they’re fronted by Second Chief Joseph Boudreaux Jr. of the Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indian tribe, son of the legendary Chief Monk Boudreaux.
