Marcus Garvey Park

18 Mt. Morris Park West, New York, NY 10027

Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem plays host to a diverse multi-generational group of jazz contemporaries from around the country. GRAMMY-nominated Jazz vocalist, composer, lyricist, arranger, and pianist Carmen Lundy has been turning heads with her voice for the better part of four decades; Her latest album Fade to Black features 11 original songs reflecting on loss, sorrow, healing, and her hope for a brighter future despite the invasive culture of modern technology. Helen Sung got her start studying classical piano, but a solo performance by Harry Connick, Jr. in her twenties moved her to shift into jazz. A skilled improviser with post-bop leanings, Sung studied under Ron Carter, Clark Terry, Jackie McLean, Sir Roland Hanna, Jimmy Heath, Wynton Marsalis, Barry Harris, and Jon Faddis, among others, and toured India and Thailand with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. She released her 8th LP Quartet+ in 2021. A force in the Chicago jazz scene, the young virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist Isaiah Collier experiments and explores new sounds on stage with his band The Chosen Few, making music that sounds destined for celestial realms, unhindered by terrestrial bounds. Rounding out the bill is vocal phenom Tyreek McDole, whose velvet-toned voice has continued to bring him accolades, most recently first prize at the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition. Multi-talented DJ and host of WBGO’s podcast Milestones DJ KulturedChild aka Angelika Beener is on the ones and twos.
