DESCRIPTION:Even before they became the house band on the Tonight Show\, The Roots were titans of hip-hop as the biggest\, baddest\, and best-known band in a genre not traditionally known for live instrumentation. Since its founding in Philadelphia in the late ‘80s by bandleader/drummer Questlove and MCs Black Thought and Malik B\, the group has released nearly a dozen studio albums\, won multiple GRAMMY awards\, and taken their music across the world and back. They’ve been Jimmy Fallon’s house band since 2009\, following him from Late Night to the Tonight Show in 2014. While the lineup has evolved over the years\, it still features founding members Black Thought—widely recognized as one of the greatest rappers of all time—and Questlove\, a pop culture icon who is one of the most influential figures in hip-hop and soul music over the last four decades. Their shows can feature surprise guests\, extended jam sessions\, and classic hits. DJ Scratch\, a produced and collaborator of Busta Rhymes\, Metallica\, Wu-Tang Clan\, 50 Cent\, Snoop Dogg\, and more\, as well as host of a weekly radio show on The Block\, will be on the decks. \n

Sonny Singh has cultivated a bold and thunderous sound that uplifts and channels ancestral wisdom with a trumpet and unwavering passion. British-Bengal musician Tara Lily’s debut album Speak In The Dark fuses jazz\, electronica\, trip-hop\, and alternative R&B with classical Indian music. The ringleader of the festivities DJ Rekha joins this magnetic line-up\, transcending the sonic borders of hip-hop\, dancehall\, and diasporic grooves in a set featuring an array of percussionists\, dancers including the iconic KalaSher\, the signature Bhangra dance lesson\, and other special guests.

To honor this milestone\, our traveling marionette theater\, the PuppetMobile\, will present Pippi\, a fresh retelling of the classic Swedish tale. \nThe production features nearly two dozen\, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers. In addition to the brilliant artistry of the production\, kids and families will enjoy the incredible adventures of quick-witted and super-strong Pippi as she overcomes bullies\, all while fending off unnecessary social conventions. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the Consulate General of Sweden in New York.
