DESCRIPTION:City Parks Foundation is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the world-renowned children’s story Pippi Longstocking by the legendary Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. To honor this milestone\, our traveling marionette theater\, the PuppetMobile\, will present Pippi\, a fresh retelling of the classic Swedish tale. \nThe production features nearly two dozen\, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers. In addition to the brilliant artistry of the production\, kids and families will enjoy the incredible adventures of quick-witted and super-strong Pippi as she overcomes bullies\, all while fending off unnecessary social conventions. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the Consulate General of Sweden in New York.

Her signature blend of vulnerable lyrics\, dreamy synths\, and Scandinavian cool has carved out a unique space in the global pop landscape alongside her rich\, captivating live performances. Sweden’s Sarah Klang makes guitar-based pop music with influences of Americana and country; her songs are rooted in tender stories about motherhood\, maturation\, and coming of age. Tiny Desk alumni Gordi weaves electronic elements into warm\, intimate folk songs with NYLON suggesting she might be the “Female Bon Iver”. Grace Cummings soulful ballads quickly rose out of Melbourne’s indie scene on the strength of her powerful\, distinctive voice\, described by Pitchfork as “a truly dazzling instrument”. PINES combine arresting melodies\, pulse-pounding beats\, and elevated\, atmospheric elements into a distinct\, immersive sonic experience. To honor this milestone\, our traveling marionette theater\, the PuppetMobile\, will present Pippi\, a fresh retelling of the classic Swedish tale. \nThe production features nearly two dozen\, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers. In addition to the brilliant artistry of the production\, kids and families will enjoy the incredible adventures of quick-witted and super-strong Pippi as she overcomes bullies\, all while fending off unnecessary social conventions. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the Consulate General of Sweden in New York.

DESCRIPTION:For the opening of our free concert series\, SummerStage and long standing programming partner\, Blue Note Jazz Festival\, has assembled a group of performers that stretch the boundaries of jazz and funk to incorporate the wide variety of African Diaspora sounds. “Laid Black” multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller has collaborated closely with artists who can be called legends without any hyperbole: Miles Davis\, Herbie Hancock\, Luther Vandross\, Wayne Shorter\, and David Sanborn– to name a few. The two-time GRAMMY winning artist’s chops are deadly serious\, but he still knows how to keep it loose\, counting “Da Butt\,” the tongue-in-cheek anthem from Spike Lee’s School Daze\, among his impressive songwriting credits. The evening also features two New Orleans-based SummerStage alumni: Tank and the Bangas\, the NPR Tiny Desk contest-winning ensemble that fuses funk\, soul\, hip-hop\, rock\, and spoken-word poetry into an unforgettable performance\, fresh off a GRAMMY win for leading lady Tank’s spoken word album; and The Soul Rebels\, an eight-piece ensemble revolutionizing the conventional brass band framework to inject new life into sounds from across the pop spectrum. DJ Logic will be on the ones and twos between sets.
