SUMMARY:Film Screening: Soundtrack to a Coup d'État / Performance: T.K. Blue and "Planet Bluu"
DESCRIPTION:6:30 PM – Concert \n8:00 PM – Screening \nSoundtrack to a Coup d’État (2023) \nThe post-colonial struggle for Congo’s resources\, told from the unique perspective of Andrée Blouin\, a neglected pioneer of female emancipation and independence throughout Africa. \nUnited Nations\, 1960: the Global South ignites a political earthquake\, jazz musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach crash the Security Council\, Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe\, and the U.S. State Department swings into action\, sending jazz ambassador Louis Armstrong to the Congo to deflect attention from the CIA-backed coup. Director Johan Grimonprez explores a moment when jazz\, colonialism\, and espionage collided\, constructing a riveting historical rollercoaster that illuminates the political machinations behind the 1961 assassination of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba. The result is a revelatory documentary richly illustrated by eyewitness accounts\, official government memos\, testimonies from mercenaries and CIA operatives\, speeches from Lumumba himself\, and a veritable canon of jazz icons. Sundance award winner Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat interrogates colonial history to tell an urgent and timely story that resonates more than ever in today’s geopolitical climate. \nDirector: JOHAN GRIMONPREZ / Producers: DAAN MILIUS & RÉMI GRELLETY / co-producers KATJA DRAAIJER & FRANK HOEVE \n  \nT.K. Blue and “Planet Bluu” \nSaxophonist\, flautist\, percussionist\, composer and bandleader T.K. Blue–perhaps best known for his long run as musical director / saxophonist for Dr. Randy Weston’s African Rhythms–has also worked with greats like Little Jimmy Scott\, Sam Rivers\, Chico Hamilton\, and Abdullah Ibrahim; released more than a dozen albums as a leader; and done three State Department tours of Africa. \n  \nThis event is free\, first come\, first served.

SUMMARY:Jon Batiste
DESCRIPTION:Marking a bold new chapter in Batiste’s catalog\, Big Money is rooted in American traditions — from gospel and soul to blues\, folk\, and rock & roll. Batiste introduced the nine-track project with its title track\, “Big Money\,” a groove-forward anthem anchored by his guitar and the soaring vocals of The Womack Sisters\, granddaughters of soul legend Sam Cooke. He followed with “Lonely Avenue\,” a soulful\, piano-driven collaboration with Randy Newman that reimagines the Doc Pomus classic made famous by Ray Charles. Co-produced with longtime collaborator Dion “No I.D.” Wilson\, the album also features a standout duet with Andra Day. Big Money caps a landmark year that included Batiste’s Super Bowl performance\, two GRAMMY wins for his work on American Symphony\, and the chart-topping success of Beethoven Blues\, which spent nine weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Classical Albums chart.

SUMMARY:Celia Cruz Celebration: Issac Delgado / Alain Perez / Aymee Nuviola / Brenda Navarrete / Melvis Santa
DESCRIPTION:Want to see the show from the best seats in the house? Try becoming a SummerStage Member for a Day! \nJoin us at 7:00 PM for a free salsa class with Talia Productions dancers Adriel Flete & Jordyn Lurie. \nFor this centennial celebration of the Cuban “Queen of Salsa” Celia Cruz\, three contemporary Cuban artists assemble in Central Park to channel her spirit and honor her legacy. Issac Delgado is a salsa singer from Havana who’s performed with Orquesta de Pacho Alonso and NG La Banda. The latter group—which he helped found—helped to popularize the then-nascent Cuban genre of timba\, a sound that blends with salsa\, American funk\, R&B\, and Afro-Cuban folkloric music. He’s recorded as a solo artist and bandleader since the ‘90s; his latest album Lluvia Y Fuego comprises original tunes as well as tributes to Benny Moré and Cheo Feliciano. The singer\, pianist\, composer\, and actress Aymee Nuviola—aka “La Sonera del Mundo”—is a decorated artist with multiple GRAMMYs and Latin GRAMMYs under her belt. She’s also connected with Celia Cruz in a more literal sense\, having played her in the Colombian telenovela Celia. Cuban singer and multi-instrumentalist Brenda Navarrete is an accomplished percussionist\, distinguishing herself as an expert on the Bata. A long-standing member of Interactivo\, a Havana-based musical collective led by the pianist Roberto Carcassés\, she has also worked with the Afro-Cuban percussion troupe Obini Bata\, a woman-founded group first formed in the early 1990s.

Morat is a Latin GRAMMY-nominated Colombian band from Bogotá; they write nostalgic love songs that ache like classic boleros but draw from R&B\, country\, and power ballads. Since their 2015 breakout single that hit no. 1 in Spain (“Mi Nuevo Vicio”)\, they’ve cut four studio albums and collaborated with the likes of Antonio Carmona\, Sebastián Yatra\, and many others. Planta Industrial is a Bronx-born Dominican duo that consists of just two voices and a drum machine\, yet brings enough energy to tear down walls. Their four-on-the-floor post-industrial dance punk puts a hard modern edge on retro sounds; rabble-rousing tracks like “OI” prove they were born to instigate. Argentine singer and influencer Yami Safdie brings her sweet Latin pop sound; her previous collab with Lasso on the song “En otra vida” gained her fans across the continent. \n \n  \n
