SUMMARY:Complexions Contemporary Ballet / Paul Taylor Dance Company / LaTasha Barnes’ The Jazz Continuum presents The Look of Love
DESCRIPTION:Want to see the show from the best seats in the house? Try becoming a SummerStage Member for a Day! Enjoy skip-the-line privileges\, complimentary beverages\, and air-conditioned restrooms.  \nThe Joyce Theater brings three contemporary dance companies to Central Park\, celebrating Jazz music through a wide range of styles. SummerStage alum Complexions Contemporary Ballet\, founded in 1994 by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson\, will perform Rhoden’s latest company premiere Midnight Riff\, which celebrates legendary female vocalists including Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn\, set to recordings by New York Voices. Led by Artistic Director Michael Novak\, The Paul Taylor Dance Company\, founded in 1954\, makes its festival debut with the vibrant work by Resident Choreographer\, Robert Battle\, Under The Rhythm\, set to music by Ella Fitzgerald\, Wycliffe Gordon\, and more. Finally\, multi-Bessie award winner (2021/2023)\, New York Times-lauded “Queen of Social Dance” and celebrated Best Dance & Breakout Star (2021) LaTasha Barnes is an internationally awarded and critically-acclaimed artist-scholar\, curator\, choreographer\, and tradition-bearer of Black American Social Dance\, co-based in Phoenix\, AZ\, and New York. Barnes presents an excerpt from her full-length solo “The Look of Love” that reflects on how love has shaped her life. Performed with a live band\, this piece blends recorded voices from her chosen “Framily” into the soundscape\, which Barnes experiences as a deeply embodied\, physical sensation. Through hip-hop\, swing\, house\, and funk\, she creates a heartfelt love letter to her influences—and a promise to those who came before her to love boldly and without fear. \nOne of the only theaters built by dancers for dance\, The Joyce Theater has garnered a well-deserved international reputation for cultivating and honoring emerging and established dance artists whose work represents a wide range of aesthetic interests. Since opening in 1982\, The Joyce has supported the dance community by providing a home for more than 400 domestic and international companies and by offering an annual 45 to 48-week season which\, each year\, allows more than 150\,000 audience members to experience diverse\, popular and challenging performances. \nThe Joyce’s invaluable commitment to artists and audiences extends beyond the immense volume of work taking place on its stage. In an effort to make dance accessible to audiences throughout New York City\, The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater\, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center\, and to outdoor programming in such spaces as Hudson River Park. \nThe Joyce anticipates many more years of success in sustaining dance by building robust\, educated audiences who share a love of the art form and embrace its enduring power.

SUMMARY:Morocco: From Dakhla to Casablanca: Hoba Hoba Spirit / Hamid El Kasri / Dakhla Casa Xpress / Mr ID / NDRK
DESCRIPTION:Doors for tonight’s show have been delayed until 6PM due to extreme weather.  \nWant to see the show from the best seats in the house? Become a SummerStage Member for a Day! Enjoy express entry\, complimentary beverages\, air conditioned restrooms\, and more! \nIn association with the Moroccan Ministry of Youth\, Culture\, and Communication\, the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad\, and Maroc Festivals\, SummerStage brings a handful of artists showcasing the diversity of sounds and rhythms from the North African nation to Central Park. Headlining is Hoba Hoba Spirit\, a Moroccan rock band from Casablanca that fuses rock\, reggae and Gnawa (a Sufi style brought from West Africa) into a sound they call “haiha”—evoking the controlled chaos and randomness of their live experience. They joined by Hamid El Kasri\, a Gnawa master trained in the Chemeli style with a distinctively deep and rich voice who performs with the three-stringed bass guembri; Dakhla Casa Xpress beginning with the stillness and warmth of the desert\, and building toward the electric energy of the city; Mr ID\, the DJ and producer who brought American rap beats\, funk rhythms and the spirit of Jazz back home with him to Morocco\, where he fused the sounds with violin airs and African percussion; and NDRK\, a rising star on the dance floors of Marrakech\, Casablanca\, and Dubai\, who also produces gems like the track selected as the anthem for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

SUMMARY:Bastille Day: Black M / Laurent Voulzy / Legends of the 80’s / Michel Polnareff
DESCRIPTION:For Bastille Day\, the Consulate General of France in New York imports four distinct acts from across the French pop landscape. Headlining is Black M\, French-Guinean rapper and member of the world-renowned group Sexion d’Assaut. Known for his animated personality and tongue-twisting rhyming style\, he broke out as a solo artist with the 2014 album Les yeux plus gros que le monde\, and has collaborated with artists such as Shakira (“Comme Moi”)\, Manu Dibango\, and Amadou & Mariam. He’s joined by Laurent Voulzy\, one of the most successful and critically acclaimed composers in contemporary French pop who has only become more prolific with age. Often working in tandem with longtime collaborator Alain Souchon\, Voulzy is known for an obsessive attention to detail in the studio\, crafting sophisticated melodies and rich arrangements. Also featured\, Legends of the 80’s\, a group of some of the most legendary French artists of the ‘80s. They’ve been touring as a unit for more than two decades\, sharing nostalgia and a love of one of France’s most popular eras in music. Finally\, Michel Polnareff\, the enigmatic French singer and composer best known for his 1966 hits “La Poupée qui fait non” and “Love Me\, Please Love Me\,” who has found success writing pop hits\, film scores\, and music for the stage.

SUMMARY:Spoon / Ratboys / Bodega / Alisa Ali
DESCRIPTION:Want to see the show from the best seats in the house? Try becoming a SummerStage Member for a Day! Enjoy skip-the-line entry\, complimentary beverages\, air-conditioned restrooms\, and more. \nSpoon\, Austin’s most esteemed rock ambassadors\, have released ten albums to date including a string of five straight top 10 records: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007)\, Transference (2010)\, They Want My Soul (2014)\, Hot Thoughts (2017)\, and Lucifer on the Sofa (2022). The latter earned the band its first-ever GRAMMY nomination (Best Rock Album) and was praised by Rolling Stone as “the best thing they’ve ever done.” Look for hits from the revered catalog and more when the band play SummerStage in Central Park. They’re joined by Ratboys\, a prolific rock band once dubbed “the nicest indie rock band in Chicago” by Pitchfork. They’re touring behind their sixth album Singin’ to an Empty Chair\, a record built around a dialogue between Steiner and a close—but estranged—loved one\, which swerves between bubbly power-pop and post-country Americana. Opening the show is Brooklyn’s own BODEGA\, the anti-consumerist rock band\, jagged post-punk energy and social critique\, whose new album will be coming out via Chrysalis Records later this Fall. Alisa Ali will DJ for the evening.

SUMMARY:SHABAKA / Kokoroko / Omar / Lovie
DESCRIPTION:Want to see the show from the best seats in the house? Try becoming a SummerStage Member for a Day! Enjoy skip-the-line\, complimentary beverages\, air-conditioned restrooms\, and more.  \nToday’s SHABAKA show on 7/1 in Central Park is still on as planned. Heat is expected to stay near 98°\, and we’ll have water stations and misting tents available at the venue. Factory-sealed plastic bottles & non-glass reusable water bottles are welcome. Stay cool and safe out there. \nSHABAKA has spent much of the past decade pushing the boundaries of contemporary jazz with different groups. He reached into the past with Shabaka and the Ancestors\, plumbed the depths of the Caribbean with the Sons of Kemet\, and forged out into the cosmos with The Comet is Coming – both of the latter\, SummerStage alumni. But\, in recent years the artist and bandleader has retreated from the saxophone and into a more meditative space\, exploring experimental and ambient sounds for his 2023 solo debut Afrikan Culture. His bold new direction is informed by the exploration of instruments like the Japanese shakuhachi\, Mayan Teotihuacan drone flutes\, Brazilian pifanos\, Slavic svirels\, South American quenas\, and other Native American flutes. For his latest LP Of The Earth\, Shabaka pivots once again\, writing\, performing\, producing\, and mixing the album entirely on his own\, doing much of it on the road with portable instruments and production tools. The result is a project he is bringing to SummerStage that integrates the expansive diversity of his past work and his return to the saxophone more completely than ever before\, including the hip-hop and R&B influences that have largely been absent from his previous jazz compositions. He’s joined by Kokoroko\, the London-based septet led by Sheila Maurice-Grey and Onome Edgeworth that strives to connect young people in the African diaspora through a fusion of funk and highlife; and Omar MBE\, UK Soul legend who has collaborated & Performed with Common\, Erykah Badu\, Leon ware\, Stevie wonder etc received a lifetime achievement award from The Queen of England. and best known for his debut single “There’s Nothing Like This.” This show is presented in association with Giant Step\, who have championed artists like Massive Attack\, Daft Punk\, Amy Winehouse\, and Jamiroquai and they have presented legendary performances with SummerStage through the years from icons like Erykah Badu\, Femi Kuti\, Janelle Monae\, Little Dragon\, Gilles Peterson and many more.

SUMMARY:Laurie Anderson: Republic of Love with Sexmob / amita
DESCRIPTION:Want to see the show from the best seats in the house? Try becoming a SummerStage Member for a Day! Enjoy skip-the-line\, complimentary beverages\, air-conditioned restrooms\, and more.  \nLaurie Anderson is best known as an early pioneer of electronic music\, but her wildly diverse catalog of ambitious multimedia projects encompasses not only music but film\, visual projections\, dance\, and spoken and written word. Her early experimentations in composition and performance led to an accidental mainstream moment with her 1982 album Big Science and the hit single “O Superman\,” which she followed up with continual exploration and thoughtful provocations. She holds a number of honorary doctorates\, and in 2002\, was appointed the first artist-in-residence of NASA. Her latest album Amelia\, released in 2024\, comprises twenty-two tracks about the aviator Amelia Earhart’s tragic last flight. “Republic of Love” was first conceived after an invitation to do a two hour talk on the relationship of government and love from a festival in Vienna. It’s a collection of songs and stories about the current state of America\, with some history thrown in\, reexamining works such as “Big Science” and “Language Is a Virus.” Backed by Sexmob\, an instrumental jazz quartet that emerged from the Knitting Factory scene in the mid-’90s and known for raw improvisation and inventive arrangements\, Anderson’s performance also features the words and thoughts of many Americans such as Bob Dylan\, Lou Reed\, John Cage\, Gertrude Stein\, William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. Anderson herself calls the work “a celebration of freedom.” A DJ set from amita will kick off the evening.

SUMMARY:Black Country\, New Road / Horsegirl / Sharp Pins / DJ Mona Dehghan
DESCRIPTION:Want to see the show from the best seats in the house? Try becoming a SummerStage Member for a Day! Enjoy skip-the-line\, complimentary beverages\, air-conditioned restrooms\, and more.  \nBlack Country\, New Road is a sextet of classically trained musicians from Cambridge\, England\, who’ve created a unique blend of jazz\, math rock\, and klezmer that turned the Brixton post-rock scene on its head even as live music took an extended pause during the pandemic. After scoring a nomination for the 2021 Mercury Prize with their debut LP For the First Time\, the band went through a lineup shakeup just days before the release of their second album Ants From Up There. The band retired the songs from their first two LPs and took brand new music out on tour\, with vocal duties inherited by the remaining band members\, resulting in the whimsical concert film and album Live at Bush Hall.  Their latest release\, Forever Howlong\, was released in 2025 to critical acclaim. They’re joined by SummerStage alums Horsegirl\, a New York-via-Chicago trio that takes musical cues from ’90s alt rockers; their latest LP Phonetics On and On was produced by the eccentric Welsh artist Cate Le Bon. Rounding out the bill is Sharp Pins\, the lo-fi power pop solo project from Kai Slater of the post-punk group Lifeguard\, who hail from the same youthful Chicago rock scene that produced Horsegirl\, formed while they were still in high school. DJ Mona Dehghan will be spinning before the show. \n\n  \nPRE-SHOW PANEL: WHAT DOES “INDIE” MEAN TODAY?
