The nonprofit arts, education, and social justice organization VOICES was originally founded by Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove, who together edited the book Voices of a People’s History of the United States, the primary source companion piece to Zinn’s 1980 historical opus. The book centers the ordinary people at the heart of the movements that shaped the history of the United States, and the film The People Speak interprets those perspectives with the help of famous actors, musicians, and poets. For SummerStage Anywhere, VOICES’ Staceyann Chin and Laura Gomez have produced a new interpretation of the book’s voices, leading a hand-picked group of students—Isa Bruder, Amadou Bah, and Alicia Jordan Jamison—to perform passages from the book.
