BalletX, Philadelphia’s premier contemporary ballet, unites distinguished choreographers with an outstanding company of dancers to forge new works of athleticism, emotion, and grace. Founded in 2005 by Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan, and now under the direction of Cox as Artistic & Executive Director, BalletX challenges the boundaries of classical ballet, producing new works of the highest quality and integrity. These pieces bring the combined visions of choreographers and dancers to life and cultivate in audiences a collective appetite for bold, new dance. Following touring performances in 2016, which included residencies at the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Vail International Dance Festival, and NY’s The Joyce Theater, BalletX continues to win over audiences and dance critics around the country. The Boston Globepraised BalletX’s “10 superb dancers,” naming the company in its top ten dance performances of the year. And, The New Yorker described BalletX as “a place of choreographic innovation.”
Artistic Director Yin Yue is internationally recognized as a versatile performer and choreographer. Born and raised in Shanghai, China, she trained rigorously in technically-demanding and highly-structured Chinese classical and folk dance, as well as classical ballet, at the Shanghai Dance School. She earned her undergraduate degree at Shanghai Normal University, and her MFA in dance from NYU’s Tisch School of The Arts in 2008. Yin created an innovative contemporary dance technique FoCo (Folk-Contemporary) that soon caught the attention of the dance world. Yin Yue is currently a 2016-2017 Artist In Residence at 92Y Dance Center in New York. She was awarded First Place in Choreography at the 2016 Shanghai Professional Performance Competition and won the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago 2015 International Commissioning Project, the 2015 BalletX Choreographic Fellowship, and the Northwest Dance Project’s 5th Annual Pretty Creatives International Choreographic Competition in 2013. She was also selected as Emerging Choreographer of 2015 Springboard Danse Montreal, as well as a finalist at The A.W.A.R.D Show 2010! presented by The Joyce Theater Foundation. Yin’s contemporary dance company, YY Dance Co., is composed of freelance dance artists, who collaborate with Yin in creating and performing choreographic works. They aim to discover powerful imagery by pushing bold athleticism within sensual and fluid movement. They’ve presented works at dance festivals such as schrit_tmacher Just Dance Festival 2016, New York International Fringe Festival, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Inside Out Festival, The Wave Rising Series, DUMBO DANCE Festival, The Current Sessions, Dancenow (NYC) at Joe’s Pub and many more. In addition, YYDC has performed at venues such as Joyce SoHo Theater, Peridance Theater, Lincoln Center Rosh Hall, Peridance Capezio Theater and New York Live Arts and many others.
This engagement of BalletX is funded through the Mid Atlantic Tours program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
