SUMMARY:Pinocchio and Gepetto's Big Apple Adventure
DESCRIPTION:During the 2026 season\, the PuppetMobile will present a fresh take on the classic fairytale Pinocchio written by Julia Darden and directed by Bruce Cannon\, with set design by Zlata Godunova and costume design by Charlie DelRisco. \nIn this new telling\, Geppetto is a New York City kid with a talent for invention\, going as far as creating a robot friend in the form of Pinocchio. The story follows the pair as they tour around classic locales\, from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre in Central Park to the Victorian Gardens Amusement Park\, and the hijinks they get into along the way.  \nThe production features hand-made marionettes crafted by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre puppet builder Kevin White. In addition to the artistry of the production\, viewers will be treated to original songs written and orchestrated by Daryl Kojak performed by the marionettes.

DESCRIPTION:The Soapbox Presents is a platform for cultural preservation and community empowerment. Founded by Marija Abney in 2020 in response to the murder of George Floyd\, The Soapbox Presents produces programming that encourages communities to resist\, and be rejuvenated and revived\, all while celebrating the brilliance of Black and brown people through art. The Soapbox Presents features some of NYC’s most talented artists and the organization has performed at The Apollo\, Lincoln Center\, Symphony Space\, Afropunk\, but most significantly for the community on the stoops and sidewalks of NYC. The platform was recently featured in the New York Times\, is the recipient of The Mellon Foundation’s Humanities in Place grant\, and was celebrated in the “Positively Black” segment on NBC New York. They’ve welcomed Babyface\, ASAP Ferg\, Rapsody\, Big Daddy Kane\, Ledisi and many others as guest artists at their activations. They can be found @thesoapboxpresents on all social platforms.

DESCRIPTION:Sun Ra: Do the Impossible (2025) \nDirected and Produced by: Christine Turner \nSun Ra: Do the Impossible is a documentary profiling the legendary jazz composer\, philosopher\, and “Godfather of Afrofuturism”\, Sun Ra. Directed by Christine Turner\, the 84-minute film follows his journey from a segregated Alabama upbringing to pioneering a cosmic\, interstellar brand of free-form jazz. The documentary tracks the life of Herman Poole Blount\, an autodidact who legally changed his name to Sun Ra. The film highlights his role as a foundational architect of Afrofuturism\, an artistic and cultural movement that blends Black history\, science fiction\, and ancient Egyptian mythology. \nKey aspects of the film include\, The Arkestra: Details his creation of the Sun Ra Arkestra\, an ever-evolving collective of dedicated musicians who lived and performed under his interstellar vision. \nVast Output: Highlights his unmatched work ethic\, producing over 1\,000 compositions and self-releasing more than 200 records as one of the first Black artists to own his own record label. \nThe Man and the Myth: Explores how his space-age mythology and costumes functioned as “liberatory technology” to empower Black identity and imagination. Interviews & Archives: Features rare archival footage\, concert clips\, and insights from current Arkestra members and contemporary artists. \n  \nJames Stewart Quartet \nSaxophonist James Stewart\, born and raised in Trenton\, NJ\, had the good fortune of studying with Mr Thomas Gryce (brother of Gigi Gryce) in high school. After earning a BA in music education in 1980\, he went on to work with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (under the direction of Mercer Ellington)\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, Frank Foster’s Loud Minority big band\, the Lionel Hampton big band\, Gloria Gaynor\, The Dells\, The Temptations\, and the late great Danny Mixon. He has long been a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra. \n  \nStay For The Credits is a curated cinematic experience and cultural event platform built around intentional programming\, immersive screenings\, curated audiences\, and thoughtful conversation. \nRooted in the belief that film is more than entertainment\, STAY creates elevated moviegoing experiences where cinema becomes a catalyst for connection\, discovery\, nostalgia\, and community. Each STAY screening is designed to honor not only the film itself\, but the culture that surrounds it—bringing together film lovers\, tastemakers\, creatives\, and communities for unforgettable shared experiences. \nImageNation Cinema Foundation is an innovative Harlem-based non-profit created to develop cinemas and audiences for independent films and music\, that depict the global Black experience. DESCRIPTION:Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo returns to SummerStage with her multilingual fusion of Afrobeat\, pop\, jazz\, reggae\, and various African traditions and percussive rhythms that earned her international acclaim. After arriving in Paris in the early ‘90s\, Kidjo recorded a run of critically acclaimed albums on Island Records—beginning with the chart-topping 1991 album Logozo—and followed it up with an ambitious trilogy exploring African music’s influence in the Americas\, from gospel to Brazilian and Latin. Over her multi-decade career she’s collaborated with the likes of Philip Glass and the Kronos Quartet to Peter Gabriel\, Alicia Keys\, Dr. John\, and Branford Marsalis. Her latest album\, Hope!! is dedicated to her late mother\, and features contributions from Pharrell Williams\, Nile Rodgers\, Ayra Starr\, Quavo\, and The Gap Band’s Charlie Wilson. With a name and image that pays tribute to the Cimarrons – Cubans of African descent that resisted slavery – and music and showmanship that re-embodies funk legends from the last century\, the medical-school student turned funk artist Cimafunk has developed into a musical force crafting the sonic future of the island and a global\, cultural phenomenon that unites and celebrates blackness across borders\, oceans and languages. DESCRIPTION:Live jazz by local artists in the neighborhood green spaces where Charlie Parker lived.  \nSoulful alto saxophonist and flautist David Lee Jones was born and raised in Houston\, TX\, a city that is deeply rooted in Blues\, R&B and Soul music. He attended Texas Southern University\, then Berklee College of Music\, where he obtained a B. A. in Jazz Composition and Arranging. In 1984 David moved to New York City and began working with jazz organist Jack McDuff. In 1992 he began working with Phyllis Hyman\, playing auxiliary keyboards and saxophones\, until her death in 1995. After joining the Grammy award winning jazz / rap group Digable Planets\, he played on\, wrote and arranged all the horn arrangements for their sophomore record “Blowout Comb.” He toured with Sade on her last U.S. tour entitled “Love Deluxe.” In recent years\, David has worked with the Mingus Big Band and the Sun Ra Arkestra\, and he leads his own Organ Groove Trio in Harlem at the American Legion Post 398 every Sunday. \nSupported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York Legislature and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and by the Howard Gilman Foundation.

This project is made possible in part with funds from Creative Engagement & UMEZ Arts Engagement\, a regrant program supported by DCLA and NYSCA and administered by LMCC.
