SUMMARY:Lettuce / Styles P / Statik Selektah
DESCRIPTION:An American funk jam band formed in the early ‘90s by teenagers at the Berklee College of Music in Boston\, Lettuce draws its name from its members’ pleas to local clubs for gigs (“Let us play”). They drew early inspiration from Herbie Hancock; Earth\, Wind and Fire; and Tower of Power\, coalescing around a love of classic funk. They would later cut a record (Rage!) featuring classic funk tracks from the ‘70s\, such as Curtis Mayfield’s “Move on Up” and Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band’s “Express Yourself.” These days their sound is a creatively stirred melting pot of hip-hop\, jazz\, New Orleans R&B\, blues\, and rock. As the band has evolved and recorded nearly a dozen live and studio albums\, its members have also made names for themselves in other projects; Ryan Zoidis (saxophone) founded the Rustic Overtones\, Erick Coomes (bass) established himself as a go-to session player and touring bassist for Britney Spears and the Game\, Adam Deitch (drums) plays with Break Science and has worked with John Scofield and Wyclef Jean\, and Adam Smirnoff has toured with Lady Gaga and Robert Randolph & the Family Band. Statik Selektah\, renowned DJ\, producer\, musician\, and radio personality\, will be spinning between sets.

DESCRIPTION:Become a SummerStage Member today! Experience the best seats in the house and access VIP benefits like express entry\, complimentary drinks\, and many more exclusive perks\, all while supporting our free programs in NYC’s parks. \nThe Driver Era duo is made up of Rocky Lynch and his brother Ross Lynch\, the former teen heartthrob of Disney’s Teen Beach Movie and Austin and Ally. That past is in the past\, though; their synth-y pop-rock sound on songs like “The Kiss” and “Malibu” is decidedly grown up\, showcasing the duo’s “ebullient\, brooding rockstar energy” (Paper). SUMMARY:OPENING NIGHT: Marcus Miller / Tank and the Bangas / The Soul Rebels / DJ Logic
DESCRIPTION:For the opening of our free concert series\, SummerStage and long standing programming partner\, Blue Note Jazz Festival\, has assembled a group of performers that stretch the boundaries of jazz and funk to incorporate the wide variety of African Diaspora sounds. “Laid Black” multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller has collaborated closely with artists who can be called legends without any hyperbole: Miles Davis\, Herbie Hancock\, Luther Vandross\, Wayne Shorter\, and David Sanborn– to name a few. The two-time GRAMMY winning artist’s chops are deadly serious\, but he still knows how to keep it loose\, counting “Da Butt\,” the tongue-in-cheek anthem from Spike Lee’s School Daze\, among his impressive songwriting credits. The evening also features two New Orleans-based SummerStage alumni: Tank and the Bangas\, the NPR Tiny Desk contest-winning ensemble that fuses funk\, soul\, hip-hop\, rock\, and spoken-word poetry into an unforgettable performance\, fresh off a GRAMMY win for leading lady Tank’s spoken word album; and The Soul Rebels\, an eight-piece ensemble revolutionizing the conventional brass band framework to inject new life into sounds from across the pop spectrum. DJ Logic will be on the ones and twos between sets.
