SUMMARY:Morocco: From Dakhla to Casablanca: Hoba Hoba Spirit / Hamid El Kasri / Dakhla Casa Xpress / Mr ID / NDRK
DESCRIPTION:In association with the Moroccan Ministry of Youth\, Culture\, and Communication\, the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad\, and Maroc Festivals\, SummerStage brings a handful of artists showcasing the diversity of sounds and rhythms from the North African nation to Central Park. Headlining is Hoba Hoba Spirit\, a Moroccan rock band from Casablanca that fuses rock\, reggae and Gnawa (a Sufi style brought from West Africa) into a sound they call “haiha”—evoking the controlled chaos and randomness of their live experience. They joined by Hamid El Kasri\, a Gnawa master trained in the Chemeli style with a distinctively deep and rich voice who performs with the three-stringed bass guembri; Dakhla Casa Xpress beginning with the stillness and warmth of the desert\, and building toward the electric energy of the city; Mr ID\, the DJ and producer who brought American rap beats\, funk rhythms and the spirit of Jazz back home with him to Morocco\, where he fused the sounds with violin airs and African percussion; and NDRK\, a rising star on the dance floors of Marrakech\, Casablanca\, and Dubai\, who also produces gems like the track selected as the anthem for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

SUMMARY:Mavis Staples / Brother Wallace / LaGuardia High School Gospel Ensemble / Luv
DESCRIPTION:Mavis Staples has been performing for eight decades. At 86 years old\, she’s known as one of the most enduring figures in American music\, earning inductions into multiple halls of fame (blues\, rock\, and gospel)\, was a Kennedy Center Honoree\, and winner of numerous GRAMMY awards\, including one for lifetime achievement. With her return to SummerStage\, she’s sure to perform the hits alongside new tracks from her 15th solo album Sad and Beautiful World. She’s collaborated with nearly every major figure of her many eras\, from Bob Dylan to Prince\, Aretha Franklin\, and Willie Nelson. Opening the evening is Brother Wallace\, a force of modern soul and gospel sound. Most recently\, he’s collaborated with The Heavy guitarist Dan Taylor to build a body of work built on his electrifying brand of soul music. The LaGuardia Gospel Ensemble explores the rich history and enduring legacy of gospel music\, tracing its evolution from the early 20th century to today while honoring its roots in the Black Church and the struggle for social change. Through powerful performances\, the ensemble celebrates one of America’s most influential musical traditions while fostering artistry\, community\, and the next generation of performers.

SUMMARY:De La Soul / Pete Rock / DJ Hannibal Buress
DESCRIPTION:At the dawn of the ‘90s\, when the most popular hip-hop was neck-deep in intimidating street tales\, New Yorkers De La Soul offered an alternate take\, striving for peace and harmony with creative rhyme styles on their critically acclaimed debut 3 Feet High and Rising. Prince Paul’s heavily sample-based production style and inventive skits remain massively influential\, even as hip-hop aesthetics have shifted from the jazz\, soul\, and classic R&B sounds he drew from. The group continued to evolve\, leaving behind the flowery aesthetic that mistakenly branded them as “hippies” for a darker tone on records like De La Soul is Dead and Buhloone Mindstate. Though this current lineup is without Trugoy the Dove—who passed in 2023—the group has experienced a resurgence of interest with new 2025 release Cabin in the Sky. They’re joined by Bronx legend Pete Rock\, producer and occasional MC best known for his collaborations with CL Smooth (“They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)”) and his production work on classic albums by Nas\, AZ\, Rakim\, and his cousin Heavy D. Widely considered one of the most renowned hip-hop producers of the ‘90s\, his hazy\, jazz-centric sample style is both distinctive and widely influential. His recent studio collaboration with Common\, The Auditorium Vol. 1\, earned him a GRAMMY nomination last year. Actor\, comedian\, and musician Hannibal Buress will open the evening with a DJ set.

SUMMARY:Complexions Contemporary Ballet / Paul Taylor Dance Company / LaTasha Barnes’ The Jazz Continuum presents The Look of Love
DESCRIPTION:The Joyce Theater brings three contemporary dance companies to Central Park\, celebrating Jazz music through a wide range of styles. SummerStage alum Complexions Contemporary Ballet\, founded in 1994 by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson\, will perform Rhoden’s latest company premiere Midnight Riff\, which celebrates legendary female vocalists including Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn\, set to recordings by New York Voices. Led by Artistic Director Michael Novak\, The Paul Taylor Dance Company\, founded in 1954\, makes its festival debut with the vibrant work by Resident Choreographer\, Robert Battle\, Under The Rhythm\, set to music by Ella Fitzgerald\, Wycliffe Gordon\, and more. Finally\, multi-Bessie award winner (2021/2023)\, New York Times-lauded “Queen of Social Dance” and celebrated Best Dance & Breakout Star (2021) LaTasha Barnes is an internationally awarded and critically-acclaimed artist-scholar\, curator\, choreographer\, and tradition-bearer of Black American Social Dance\, co-based in Phoenix\, AZ\, and New York. Barnes presents an excerpt from her full-length solo “The Look of Love” that reflects on how love has shaped her life. Performed with a live band\, this piece blends recorded voices from her chosen “Framily” into the soundscape\, which Barnes experiences as a deeply embodied\, physical sensation. Through hip-hop\, swing\, house\, and funk\, she creates a heartfelt love letter to her influences—and a promise to those who came before her to love boldly and without fear. \nOne of the only theaters built by dancers for dance\, The Joyce Theater has garnered a well-deserved international reputation for cultivating and honoring emerging and established dance artists whose work represents a wide range of aesthetic interests. Since opening in 1982\, The Joyce has supported the dance community by providing a home for more than 400 domestic and international companies and by offering an annual 45 to 48-week season which\, each year\, allows more than 150\,000 audience members to experience diverse\, popular and challenging performances. \nThe Joyce’s invaluable commitment to artists and audiences extends beyond the immense volume of work taking place on its stage. In an effort to make dance accessible to audiences throughout New York City\, The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater\, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center\, and to outdoor programming in such spaces as Hudson River Park. \nThe Joyce anticipates many more years of success in sustaining dance by building robust\, educated audiences who share a love of the art form and embrace its enduring power.
