SUMMARY:Big Freedia / Resistance Revival Chorus / Courtney “Balenciaga” Washington’s MasterZ at Work / DJ Butchish
DESCRIPTION:Big Freedia is the queen of New Orleans bounce\, a high-energy strain of hip-hop. Her sets are performed at maximum intensity\, flanked by her infamous crew of twerking dancers that demand—and command—attention. She helped popularize the formerly underground genre\, taking the sound around the world\, and collaborated with the likes of RuPaul\, Beyoncé\, Sia\, and Lil Wayne\, and appeared on various television programs including Treme (HBO)\, P-Valley (Starz)\, and the 2022 reboot of Queer as Folk (Peacock). This collective of fierce and resilient young performers from varied backgrounds fuses together street dance\, jazz\, ballroom\, vogue\, and hip-hop\, fostering community in under-resourced areas of Brooklyn. It’s a hometown show for Washington\, who spent her formative years performing in Von King Park\, and went on to found the Kiki House of Juicy Couture\, lead the vogue House of Balenciaga\, and win the Avis Penda’vis Angel Award at the 2022 Latex Ball. SUMMARY:Morat / Planta Industrial / Yami Safdie / DJ EI G
DESCRIPTION:Want to see the show from the best seats in the house? Try becoming a SummerStage Member for a Day! \nIn association with the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC)\, SummerStage brings a pair of Spanish-language music acts that offer a taste of the best in contemporary Latin music to Central Park. Morat is a Latin GRAMMY-nominated Colombian band from Bogotá; they write nostalgic love songs that ache like classic boleros but draw from R&B\, country\, and power ballads. Since their 2015 breakout single that hit no. 1 in Spain (“Mi Nuevo Vicio”)\, they’ve cut four studio albums and collaborated with the likes of Antonio Carmona\, Sebastián Yatra\, and many others. Planta Industrial is a Bronx-born Dominican duo that consists of just two voices and a drum machine\, yet brings enough energy to tear down walls. Their four-on-the-floor post-industrial dance punk puts a hard modern edge on retro sounds; rabble-rousing tracks like “OI” prove they were born to instigate. Argentine singer and influencer Yami Safdie brings her sweet Latin pop sound; her previous collab with Lasso on the song “En otra vida” gained her fans across the continent. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Death From Above 1979 / Julianna Riolino / Martyn Bootyspoon
DESCRIPTION:In association with the Consulate General of Canada\, SummerStage brings Canadian artists to Central Park. \nThe boundary pushing Death From Above 1979 originated from Toronto with the uncompromising one-two punch of 2002’s fuzz-bomb EP Heads Up and 2004’s epochal debut album You’re a Woman\, I’m a Machine. The band has made numerous appearances on the Billboard charts as well as on TV performing on iconic late-night shows including David Letterman and The Tonight Show Jimmy Fallon\, which opened up their catalogue to a wider audience. Julianna Riolino\, a Southern Ontario singer-songwriter who creates introspective indie twang songs that speak love\, loss\, and finding oneself\, and Montréal-based high-intensity Martyn Bootyspoon\, round out the evening. \n

SUMMARY:Lettuce / Styles P / Statik Selektah
DESCRIPTION:An American funk jam band formed in the early ‘90s by teenagers at the Berklee College of Music in Boston\, Lettuce draws its name from its members’ pleas to local clubs for gigs (“Let us play”). They drew early inspiration from Herbie Hancock; Earth\, Wind and Fire; and Tower of Power\, coalescing around a love of classic funk. They would later cut a record (Rage!) featuring classic funk tracks from the ‘70s\, such as Curtis Mayfield’s “Move on Up” and Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band’s “Express Yourself.” These days their sound is a creatively stirred melting pot of hip-hop\, jazz\, New Orleans R&B\, blues\, and rock. As the band has evolved and recorded nearly a dozen live and studio albums\, its members have also made names for themselves in other projects; Ryan Zoidis (saxophone) founded the Rustic Overtones\, Erick Coomes (bass) established himself as a go-to session player and touring bassist for Britney Spears and the Game\, Adam Deitch (drums) plays with Break Science and has worked with John Scofield and Wyclef Jean\, and Adam Smirnoff has toured with Lady Gaga and Robert Randolph & the Family Band. Statik Selektah\, renowned DJ\, producer\, musician\, and radio personality\, will be spinning between sets.
