SUMMARY:UBB 40th Anniversary Celebration: BreakBeat Lou & Lord Finesse / Diamond D / Grand Puba / Sadat X / Nice & Smooth / Peter Gunz / DJ Boogie Blind
DESCRIPTION:Want to see the show from the best seats in the house? Try becoming a SummerStage Member for a Day! Enjoy skip-the-line privileges\, complimentary beverages\, and air-conditioned restrooms.  \nFew records—if any—have had as much impact on music as the Ultimate Breaks and Beats compilation assembled by BreakBeat Lou and BreakBeat Lenny in 1986. By collecting what they called the “foundational” breakbeats – the very records DJs looped for breakdancers at the earliest hip-hop park jams and block parties\, they created not only an essential tool for DJs\, but also an accidental archive of hip-hop’s DNA. For this 40th anniversary celebration of the original compilation—of which only 25 volumes were released between 1986 and 1991— Breakbeat Lou is joined by members of the Bronx’s legendary Diggin’ in the Crates crew\, Lord Finesse and Diamond D. As pioneers of a distinct New York sound\, their work helped define the golden era of hip-hop production and lyricism that would soon resonate nationwide. Rounding out a line up filled with SummerStage alumni are Grand Puba and Sadat X of the acclaimed socially conscious rap group Brand Nubian; the iconic duo Nice & Smooth\, best known for their single “Hip-Hop Junkies\,” their feature on Big Daddy Kane’s “Pimpin Ain’t Easy\,” and their unforgettable appearance on Gang Starr’s “DWYCK”; and Peter Gunz\, whose collaboration with Lord Tariq\, “Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)” became a late-90s anthem—sampling the unmistakable groove of Steely Dan. Completing the celebration is a set by DJ Boogie Blind\, known for his affiliations with the legendary X‑ecutioners as well as the Diggin’ in the Crates collective. Together\, these artists represent the culture\, creativity\, and crate-digging spirit that helped transform a DJ tool into one of hip-hop’s most influential musical documents. \nLive graffiti will be done on site by James Top\, Kingbee & Stem Ynn. \n  \nPre show panel: Free with RSVP \nRock Steady \nOn the heels of Rock Steady For Life: Bringing Breakdancing to the World\, SummerStage hosts a monumental book event celebrating the global legacy of the Rock Steady Crew. The evening centers\non an intimate panel diving deep into hip‐hop history\, style\, survival\, and the untold stories behind Richard “Crazy Legs” Colón’s highly anticipated new book — a rare chance to experience the culture in conversation with the people who built it. \nRichard “Crazylegs” Colón – Panelist \nFounder and president of the legendary Rock Steady Crew and one of the world’s most influential B‐boys\, Colón is often hailed as the “godfather of breakdancing.” He helped take breaking from the Bronx to stages\, films\, and tours across the globe\, innovating moves and mentoring generations of dancers along the way. In Rock Steady For Life\, he opens his personal archives to share five decades of culture — rare photos\, untold stories\, and a deeply human look at how hip‐hop shaped his life and crew. \nLuis “Breakbeat Lou” Flores – Panelist \nEditor and extender of Ultimate Breaks & Beats (UBB)\, the iconic 25‐volume vinyl compilation series released between 1986 and 1991 on Street Beat Records\, created with Leonard “BreakBeat Lenny” Roberts. These records collected and lengthened classic drum breaks from late‐’60s and ’70s funk\, soul\, rock\, and disco — becoming a foundational sample source for golden‐age hip‐hop producers and influencing countless artists from Public Enemy to DJ Premier\, Dr. Dre\, and beyond. \nThe Delgado’s Podcast – Moderator \nA culture‐based platform dedicated to highlighting creators and artists whose work has made a significant impact in their fields. Known for organic\, in‐depth interviews where storytelling\, perspective\, and lived experience are front and center\, the host will guide a fireside‐style dialogue with Crazy Legs and guests — surfacing the personal\, historical\, and cultural layers behind Rock Steady For Life.

SUMMARY:Doug E. Fresh & Funk Flex Second Annual Hip-Hop Appreciation Park Jam
DESCRIPTION:“Human beatbox” Doug E. Fresh is one of the pivotal figures of hip-hop\, who can accurately imitate drum machines and effects with just his mouth and a microphone. His early collaborations with Slick Rick — ”The Show” and “La Di Da Di” — are among the genre’s foundational hits. Funk Flex is more than just a DJ. He’s a hip-hop institution\, a radio and club mainstay who has helped some of New York’s biggest artists and hits break out and continues to keep his finger on the pulse of hip-hop and R&B. These SummerStage alums are back with an old-school park jam reminiscent of hip-hop’s humble and joyous beginnings\, celebrating the art form in which they’ve invested their lives\, in the borough in which it was born. \nLive graffiti will be done on-site by James Top\, Kingbee & BG 183.

SUMMARY:Trueno / Milo J / J Noa
DESCRIPTION:Want to see the show from the best seats in the house? Try becoming a SummerStage Member for a Day! Enjoy skip-the-line privileges\, complimentary beverages\, and air-conditioned restrooms.  \nA trio of rising Latin hip-hop stars head to Central Park for this show\, presented in association with the Latin Alternative Music Conference. Of the various figures in the red hot Argentinian rap scene\, none has shined brighter than Trueno\, the son of Uruguayan rapper Peligro and a veteran of the scene’s battle rap circuit. His early appearance on producer Bizarrap’s freestyle show BZRP Freestyle Sessions launched him to nationwide fame and helped establish the show as a chart-topping vehicle\, landing the pair at the number one spot on Argentina’s Hot 100. He’s since released several solo albums\, collaborated with the likes of Bad Gyal\, Feid\, and J Balvin\, and is responsible for one of the Argentinian rap scene’s biggest hits in 2020’s “Mamichula.” He’s joined by Milo J\, who leveraged his viral hit “Milagrosa” into collaborations with Nicki Nicole\, Duki\, and Peso Pluma; he also benefited from an appearance on Bizarrap’s YouTube series\, which led to the pair’s collaborative EP En Dormir Sin Madrid. His latest LP La Vida Era Más Corta saw him take a hard left turn into art-pop\, fusing Argentine folklore with urban and experimental sounds. Opening the show is the dynamic Dominican rapper J Noa\, a nimble-tongued MC with a rapid-fire flow who stunned the world at her NPR Tiny Desk performance\, her first outside of her own neighborhood in the Dominican Republic.

SUMMARY:WayV / THE EITHER / Chopstix
DESCRIPTION:For a century\, China Institute of America has been dedicated to deepening the world’s understanding of China. In celebration of their Centennial\, SummerStage brings two takes on the future sounds of Chinese pop to Central Park. The K-pop boy band NCT is so massive that it’s become its own ecosystem\, spinning off members into their own sub-groups that establish their own voice. WayV are the fourth such to spin off—and its first China-based collective—recording pop songs that fuse hip-hop and dance with R&B-stylized vocals sung in Mandarin since their 2019 debut EP The Vision. They’re joined by THE EITHER\, formed in New York in 2017. Their sound — Post-Orientalism — rebuilds Eastern elements for today\, blending electrified traditional instruments\, Chinese opera-inspired vocals\, progressive rock energy\, and compositions with a strong Eastern melodic identity into a bold\, future-facing performance.

SUMMARY:Andrew Bird with Wordless Music Orchestra 20th Anniversary Performance of "The Mysterious Production of Eggs" / Surma
DESCRIPTION:The violinist\, singer\, songwriter\, and composer Andrew Bird has stretched the musical boundaries of folk in an eclectic career that spans 18 albums\, developing a multi-layered sound with diverse instrumentation. His most defining work is arguably 2005’s The Mysterious Production of Eggs\, which demonstrated an avant-pop sophistication with a mastery of elaborate loops\, multi-tracked violin\, and his remarkable prowess as a whistler. Bird has headlined shows at iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall\, the Sydney Opera House\, Walt Disney Concert Hall\, and Red Rocks Amphitheatre\, but he’ll celebrate the 20th anniversary of that record at SummerStage in Central Park with the Wordless Music Orchestra\, performing the record for the first time in its entirety alongside a full orchestra\, followed by a suite of fan-favorites from his nearly 30-year repertoire. Surma’s presentation is presented with support from the Arte Institute. Learn more about Arte Institute at https://arteinstitute.org/.

SUMMARY:Funk Flex Birthday R&B Picnic: El DeBarge / Jon B / Fonda Rae / Taana Gardner / Strafe / Dres From Blacksheep / DJ M U / Music by Funk Flex
DESCRIPTION:Funk Flex has been spinning hip-hop and R&B across NYC’s airwaves for the better part of four decades\, becoming a hip-hop institution. His R&B picnic in Central Park celebrates his birthday and this year he is bringing some R&B heavy-hitters for a not-to-be-missed throwback show. They include Jon B\, a platinum-selling R&B artist discovered by Babyface whose first three LPs climbed the Billboard 200 album chart and whose collaboration with 2Pac\, ”Are U Still Down\,” was among the late rapper’s final recordings; Fonda Rae\, an American R&B singer best known for her club hits like “Over Like a Fat Rat” and “Touch Me”; Taana Gardner\, who saw early success in disco with West End Records in the late ‘70s-early ‘80s\, and whose 1981 single “Heartbeat” was famously remixed by Larry Levan into a staple at the Paradise Garage; Strafe\, aka Brooklyn native and producer Steve Standard\, who is best known for the 1984 single “Set It Off\,” which has been extensively sampled in hip-hop\, house\, and techno circles; and Dres\, best known as one half of the duo Black Sheep\, the Native Tongues group whose debut LP A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing remains a foundation of New York City’s early ‘90s boom-bap era. Joining Flex on the ones and twos spinning records between sets is his fellow Hot97 DJ M U.
