The story follows the pair as they tour around classic locales\, from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre in Central Park to the Victorian Gardens Amusement Park\, and the hijinks they get into along the way.  \nThe production features hand-made marionettes crafted by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre puppet builder Kevin White. In addition to the artistry of the production\, viewers will be treated to original songs written and orchestrated by Daryl Kojak performed by the marionettes.

The headliner is Crystal Waters\, the house and dance music singer known for hits like “100% Pure Love” and house staple “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless).” She’s joined by Cynthia\, the Puerto Rican freestyle singer who had a hit with her Johnny O collaboration “Dreamboy/Dreamgirl” and her cover of the Stylistics’ “Break Up to Make Up”; Frankie Cutlass\, a member of Funk Flex’s DJ collective The Flip Squad whose hook from his classic single “Puerto Rico” became a staple of Funk Flex’s sets; Force MDs\, Staten Island’s own R&B group that fused doo wop and hip-hop and peaked with their Top 10 pop hit “Tender Love” in 1985; Sunshine Anderson\, the North Carolina R&B and soul singer who had a hit in 2001 with her debut single “Heard It All Before”; Mr Cheeks\, formerly of the Lost Boyz\, the Queens trio responsible for “Lifestyles of the Rich & Shameless” and “Renee\,” who went solo in 1999 and had a hit with his Missy Elliott and Petey Pablo collaboration “Lights\, Camera\, Action!”; and CL Smooth\, one half of the duo with Pete Rock responsible for foundational works such as “They Reminisce Over You (T.O.N.Y.).”

DESCRIPTION:For more than 40 years\, Charlie Aponte was the lead vocalist for the legendary El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico\, one of the island’s most successful salsa groups of all time and a salsa institution. One of his earliest performances with the band included a 1973 show in front of 50\,000 fans at Yankee Stadium as the opening act for the Fania All-Stars’ sold-out concert. With El Gran Combo\, Aponte performed all over the world\, sold millions of records\, and won multiple Latin GRAMMYs. Aponte left the group in 2014 and quickly released his debut solo album Una Nueva Historia the next year. His 2017 album Pa’ Mi Gente was nominated for the Latin GRAMMY for Best Salsa Album. He’s joined by Judy Santos\, an American singer best known for her work with the Dominican-American bachata group Aventura. She collaborated on three of their albums in the early aughts\, including the song “Obsesión\,””Angelito\,” and “La Guerra\,” her 2002 duet with Romeo Santos (no relation) that topped the charts in several Latin American countries.

DESCRIPTION:Taiwanese Waves is celebrating its 10th anniversary by showcasing a diverse lineup of artists from across the musical spectrum. This year’s program includes a trio of R&B and hip-hop acts: 9m88 (pronounced “Jo-m-Baba”)\, a jazzy singer-songwriter with strong R&B\, neo-soul\, and hip-hop influences; ØZI\, a singer-songwriter and rapper known for blending urban American styles with Mandopop; and YELLOW 黃宣\, the fashion-forward avant pop artist with a flair for the dramatic. You’re likely to hear some of their collaborations\, such as ØZI and 9m88’s song “Black Out\,” or the 9m88 and YELLOW (黃宣) single “怪天氣Strange Weather.” They’re joined by Chance Emerson\, a relative of Ralph Waldo Emerson born in Taiwan to a Taiwanese mother and American father and a singer-songwriter who explores the human condition with humor and empathy; Mong Tong\, Taiwanese brothers who channel Southeast Asian mythology and folklore through the hypnotic rhythms and ethereal melodies of ‘60s and ‘70s psychedelic music; and a DJ set from Chinatown Records\, the archival project from DJ and historian yiuyiu 瑶瑶 that stewards more than 30 distinct vinyl\, CD\, and cassette collections inherited from her family & neighbors\, spanning nearly 100 years of Chinese music and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:The Soapbox Presents is a platform for cultural preservation and community empowerment. Founded by Marija Abney in 2020 in response to the murder of George Floyd\, The Soapbox Presents produces programming that encourages communities to resist\, and be rejuvenated and revived\, all while celebrating the brilliance of Black and brown people through art. The Soapbox Presents features some of NYC’s most talented artists and the organization has performed at The Apollo\, Lincoln Center\, Symphony Space\, Afropunk\, but most significantly for the community on the stoops and sidewalks of NYC. The platform was recently featured in the New York Times\, is the recipient of The Mellon Foundation’s Humanities in Place grant\, and was celebrated in the “Positively Black” segment on NBC New York. They’ve welcomed Babyface\, ASAP Ferg\, Rapsody\, Big Daddy Kane\, Ledisi and many others as guest artists at their activations. They can be found @thesoapboxpresents on all social platforms.

DESCRIPTION:Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo returns to SummerStage with her multilingual fusion of Afrobeat\, pop\, jazz\, reggae\, and various African traditions and percussive rhythms that earned her international acclaim. After arriving in Paris in the early ‘90s\, Kidjo recorded a run of critically acclaimed albums on Island Records—beginning with the chart-topping 1991 album Logozo—and followed it up with an ambitious trilogy exploring African music’s influence in the Americas\, from gospel to Brazilian and Latin. Over her multi-decade career she’s collaborated with the likes of Philip Glass and the Kronos Quartet to Peter Gabriel\, Alicia Keys\, Dr. John\, and Branford Marsalis. Her latest album\, Hope!! is dedicated to her late mother\, and features contributions from Pharrell Williams\, Nile Rodgers\, Ayra Starr\, Quavo\, and The Gap Band’s Charlie Wilson. DJ Freshy K\, a Nigerian Afrobeats specialist based in NYC who has opened for the likes of Jidenna\, Flavour\, Olamide\, Davido\, and Wizkid\, opens the show with a DJ set. Also\, Mei Semones\, an American indie rock musician who writes jazz-influenced songs in both English and Japanese\, has invited her own crew of friends to perform music from Getz/Gilberto\, the classic collaborative album by João Gilberto and Stan Getz released on Verve in 1964. His upcoming album\, Darling Blue\, features a who’s who of country music such as Billy Strings and Kaitlin Butts.  His twangy\, guitar-heavy songs like “Wildflowers and Wine” and “Homesick” tend to be love letters offering appreciation for his home state of South Carolina and his southern roots. Atlanta-born band Penelope Road will open the evening.
