SUMMARY:OPENING NIGHT: Ledisi for Dinah / Spilata / DJ Kultured Child
DESCRIPTION:On the opening night of its 40th Anniversary season\, SummerStage and the Blue Note Jazz Festival will showcase a supreme talent paying homage to jazz and R&B legend Dinah Washington. GRAMMY-winning vocalist Ledisi will perform selections from her new album For Dinah\, an 8-song tribute to genre trailblazer Dinah Washington\, who breathed new life into R&B in the ‘50s and ‘60s with her gospel\, jazz\, and blues roots\, influencing the likes of Aretha Franklin\, Quincy Jones\, and more. The album is “a love letter to a beautiful Black woman who has inspired me. Made Me\,” said Ledisi\, who imbues Washington’s classics such as “This Bitter Earth\,” and “What a Difference a Day Made\,” with her own neo-soul and contemporary jazz stylings. The evening also features Spilata (Charles Turner III) & Uptown Swing\, led by the titular jazz vocalist and songwriter who’s already made his mark at classic venues such as Birdland\, Minton’s Playhouse\, and Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Multi-talented DJ and producer of Milestones: Celebrating the Culture podcast Angélika Beener aka DJ Kultured Child is on the ones and twos.

SUMMARY:Black Country\, New Road / Horsegirl / Sharp Pins
DESCRIPTION:Black Country\, New Road is a sextet of classically trained musicians from Cambridge\, England\, who’ve created a unique blend of jazz\, math rock\, and klezmer that turned the Brixton post-rock scene on its head even as live music took an extended pause during the pandemic. After scoring a nomination for the 2021 Mercury Prize with their debut LP For the First Time\, the band went through a lineup shakeup just days before the release of their second album Ants From Up There. The band retired the songs from their first two LPs and took brand new music out on tour\, with vocal duties inherited by the remaining band members\, resulting in the whimsical concert film and album Live at Bush Hall. They’re joined by SummerStage alums Horsegirl\, a New York-via-Chicago trio that takes musical cues from ’90s alt rockers; their latest LP Phonetics On and On was produced by the eccentric Welsh artist Cate Le Bon. Rounding out the bill is Sharp Pins\, the lo-fi power pop solo project from Kai Slater of the post-punk group Lifeguard\, who hail from the same youthful Chicago rock scene that produced Horsegirl\, formed while they were still in high school.

SUMMARY:Laurie Anderson: Republic of Love with Sexmob
DESCRIPTION:Laurie Anderson is best known as an early pioneer of electronic music\, but her wildly diverse catalog of ambitious multimedia projects encompasses not only music but film\, visual projections\, dance\, and spoken and written word. Her early experimentations in composition and performance led to an accidental mainstream moment with her 1982 album Big Science and the hit single “O Superman\,” which she followed up with continual exploration and thoughtful provocations. She holds a number of honorary doctorates\, and in 2002\, was appointed the first artist-in-residence of NASA. Her latest album Amelia\, released in 2024\, comprises twenty-two tracks about the aviator Amelia Earhart’s tragic last flight. “Republic of Love” was first conceived after an invitation to do a two hour talk on the relationship of government and love from a festival in Vienna. It’s a collection of songs and stories about the current state of America\, with some history thrown in\, reexamining works such as “Big Science” and “Language Is a Virus.” Backed by Sexmob\, an instrumental jazz quartet that emerged from the Knitting Factory scene in the mid-’90s and known for raw improvisation and inventive arrangements\, Anderson’s performance also features the words and thoughts of many Americans such as Bob Dylan\, Lou Reed\, John Cage\, Gertrude Stein\, William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. Anderson herself calls the work “a celebration of freedom.”

SUMMARY:SHABAKA / Kokoroko / Omar / Lovie
DESCRIPTION:SHABAKA has spent much of the past decade pushing the boundaries of contemporary jazz with different groups. He reached into the past with Shabaka and the Ancestors\, plumbed the depths of the Caribbean with the Sons of Kemet\, and forged out into the cosmos with The Comet is Coming – both of the latter\, SummerStage alumni. But\, in recent years the artist and bandleader has retreated from the saxophone and into a more meditative space\, exploring experimental and ambient sounds for his 2023 solo debut Afrikan Culture. His bold new direction is informed by the exploration of instruments like the Japanese shakuhachi\, Mayan Teotihuacan drone flutes\, Brazilian pifanos\, Slavic svirels\, South American quenas\, and other Native American flutes. For his latest LP Of The Earth\, Shabaka pivots once again\, writing\, performing\, producing\, and mixing the album entirely on his own\, doing much of it on the road with portable instruments and production tools. The result is a project he is bringing to SummerStage that integrates the expansive diversity of his past work and his return to the saxophone more completely than ever before\, including the hip-hop and R&B influences that have largely been absent from his previous jazz compositions. He’s joined by Kokoroko\, the London-based septet led by Sheila Maurice-Grey and Onome Edgeworth that strives to connect young people in the African diaspora through a fusion of funk and highlife; and Omar MBE\, UK Soul legend who has collaborated & Performed with Common\, Erykah Badu\, Leon ware\, Stevie wonder etc received a lifetime achievement award from The Queen of England. and best known for his debut single “There’s Nothing Like This.” This show is presented in association with Giant Step\, who have championed artists like Massive Attack\, Daft Punk\, Amy Winehouse\, and Jamiroquai and they have presented legendary performances with SummerStage through the years from icons like Erykah Badu\, Femi Kuti\, Janelle Monae\, Little Dragon\, Gilles Peterson and many more.

SUMMARY:Spoon / Ratboys / Bodega
DESCRIPTION:Spoon\, Austin’s most esteemed rock ambassadors\, have released ten albums to date including a string of five straight top 10 records: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007)\, Transference (2010)\, They Want My Soul (2014)\, Hot Thoughts (2017)\, and Lucifer on the Sofa (2022). The latter earned the band its first-ever GRAMMY nomination (Best Rock Album) and was praised by Rolling Stone as “the best thing they’ve ever done.” Look for hits from the revered catalog and more when the band play SummerStage in Central Park. They’re joined by Ratboys\, a prolific rock band once dubbed “the nicest indie rock band in Chicago” by Pitchfork. They’re touring behind their sixth album Singin’ to an Empty Chair\, a record built around a dialogue between Steiner and a close—but estranged—loved one\, which swerves between bubbly power-pop and post-country Americana. Opening the show is Brooklyn’s own BODEGA\, the anti-consumerist rock band\, jagged post-punk energy and social critique\, whose new album will be coming out via Chrysalis Records later this Fall.

SUMMARY:Duck Down Music presents: Heltah Skeltah & O.G.C. of Boot Camp Clik\, Nocturnal & Da Storm 30 Year Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Duck Down Music and the Boot Camp Clik represent an era of New York City hip-hop that focused on the hardworking tenacity of the scene\, prioritizing bars over bling. In their late-’90s heyday\, the imprint released nine albums including classics from Smif-N-Wessun and Black Moon. The first music to emerge from their label deal with Priority Records would be from newcomers Heltah Skeltah (Rock and the late Sean Price) & O.G.C. (Starang Wondah\, Louieville Sluggah\, and Top Dog)—first as the supergroup the Fab Five in 1995\, and later the following year as separate groups. This show in Bedford-Stuyvesant celebrates the 30th anniversary of those 1996 debuts: Heltah Skeltah’s Nocturnal & O.G.C.’s Da Storm\, two albums that explore the city’s edges with sparse beats and cutting wordplay.

SUMMARY:Mereba / Mack Keane / Arima Ederra / Halfmoon BK
DESCRIPTION:In just 10 short years\, the German music performance platform COLORSxSTUDIOS has evolved from a simple idea—showcasing emerging artists through stripped-down live performances with a minimalist\, monochrome aesthetic—into one of the most influential live-music platforms on the internet. For this show in Bed-Stuy’s Herbert Von King park\, they invite to the heart of Brooklyn a trio of cutting edge artists on the cusp of breaking out. Mereba\, a talented singer and songwriter with a deep connection to the American South who effortlessly flits between hip-hop\, folk\, and progressive R&B\, has already recorded with both big indies (Secretly Canadian)\, major labels (Interscope)\, and Dreamville’s Spillage Village collective. Her debut 2019 LP The Jungle Is The Only Way Out was co-produced by Samuel Hoffman and 9th Wonder. She’s joined by Mack Keane\, the Los Angeles native emerging as a leader of the next wave of R&B. His self-produced 2025 project Entries demonstrated his command of songwriting and storytelling\, earning him a spot opening for Destin Conrad on the Love On Digital Tour. He has since partnered with Star Trak Entertainment – the label behind some of the most defining sounds in R&B – and is gearing up to release his debut album Wide Eyed on May 8. Opening the show is Arima Ederra\, who imbued melancholy with bursts of sunshine on her debut LP An Orange Colored Day; her latest album A Rush to Nowhere takes a morose ‘80s rock sentimentality to bolder and darker places. With DJ sets from Halfmoon BK\, the hip internet radio station turned music media platform and “new age cultural institution” with its finger on the pulse of Black dance music in New York City.

SUMMARY:MIKE's Young World: Max B / MIKE with The Band of the Century
DESCRIPTION:As rapper and curator MIKE’s career has grown from teenage phenom into budding label owner\, so has the size of his tent. His annual Young World festival emerged from the intimate Abrons Art Center in lower Manhattan into the sprawling block party it’s become today\, taking over a sizable portion of Bed-Stuy’s largest park. This year MIKE curates a line up headlined by Max B\, the legendary Harlem MC who rose to prominence in the mid 2000s. Despite a 16 year incarceration from 2016-2025\, he maintained a strong influence on hip-hop’s sound and a cult-like fanbase that’s global\, but most pronounced in his hometown of NYC. For the first time in front of a wide audience\, MIKE will be backed by “the Band of the Century” – the band he developed for his NPR Tiny Desk concert. Additional performers will be announced soon.

A foundational member of the loose late-’90s hip-hop/R&B collective the Soulquarians\, Bilal has an effortless\, understated swag. It oozes from every track of his 2001 debut 1st Born Second\, a retro yet fresh take on soul music at the turn of the century. He’s gotten more experimental as he’s grown\, collaborating with artists such as Kimbra\, Otis Brown III\, Kat Dahlia\, Slum Village\, and Kendrick Lamar on his third album To Pimp a Butterfly. Bilal’s latest release is Live at Glasshaus\, a live recording from an intimate\, career-spanning performance with Questlove\, Robert Glasper\, and Burniss Travis as his backing band. SUMMARY:De La Soul / Pete Rock
DESCRIPTION:At the dawn of the ‘90s\, when the most popular hip-hop was neck-deep in intimidating street tales\, New Yorkers De La Soul offered an alternate take\, striving for peace and harmony with creative rhyme styles on their critically acclaimed debut 3 Feet High and Rising. Prince Paul’s heavily sample-based production style and inventive skits remain massively influential\, even as hip-hop aesthetics have shifted from the jazz\, soul\, and classic R&B sounds he drew from. The group continued to evolve\, leaving behind the flowery aesthetic that mistakenly branded them as “hippies” for a darker tone on records like De La Soul is Dead and Buhloone Mindstate. Though this current lineup is without Trugoy the Dove—who passed in 2023—the group has experienced a resurgence of interest with new 2025 release Cabin in the Sky. They’re joined by Bronx legend Pete Rock\, producer and occasional MC best known for his collaborations with CL Smooth (“They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)”) and his production work on classic albums by Nas\, AZ\, Rakim\, and his cousin Heavy D. Widely considered one of the most renowned hip-hop producers of the ‘90s\, his hazy\, jazz-centric sample style is both distinctive and widely influential. His recent studio collaboration with Common\, The Auditorium Vol. 1\, earned him a GRAMMY nomination last year.
