GRAMMY-winning Mexican singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas has been a mainstay of Mexican pop since her breakout 2003 LP Sí\, a lovestruck collection of sun-drenched hits that’s been described as “relentlessly perky.” She’s best known for the catchy pop found on that record and its follow-up Limon y Sal\, but the one-time member of ska band Tijuana No! debuted with the significantly edgier rock en español records Aqui and Bueninvento\, and has written songs for and performed with a wide range of Latin artists\, from Paulina Rubio and Mala Rodríguez to Miguel Bosé and Los Tigres del Norte. She’s joined by the Venezuelan singer and composer Lasso\, known for his brand of Latin pop\, rock\, and romantic ballads; his 2011 debut album Sin Otro Sentido made him an overnight star in Venezuela (and landed him a starring role in a TV soap opera). He would later win the Best Pop Rock Latin GRAMMY for “Ojos Marrones” in 2023.

By collecting what they called the “foundational” breakbeats – the very records DJs looped for breakdancers at the earliest hip-hop park jams and block parties\, they created not only an essential tool for DJs\, but also an accidental archive of hip-hop’s DNA. For this 40th anniversary celebration of the original compilation—of which only 25 volumes were released between 1986 and 1991— Breakbeat Lou is joined by members of the Bronx’s legendary Diggin’ in the Crates crew\, Lord Finesse and Diamond D. As pioneers of a distinct New York sound\, their work helped define the golden era of hip-hop production and lyricism that would soon resonate nationwide. Rounding out a line up filled with SummerStage alumni are Grand Puba and Sadat X of the acclaimed socially conscious rap group Brand Nubian; the iconic duo Nice & Smooth\, best known for their single “Hip-Hop Junkies\,” their feature on Big Daddy Kane’s “Pimpin Ain’t Easy\,” and their unforgettable appearance on Gang Starr’s “DWYCK”; and Peter Gunz\, whose collaboration with Lord Tariq\, “Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)” became a late-90s anthem—sampling the unmistakable groove of Steely Dan. Completing the celebration is a set by DJ Boogie Blind\, known for his affiliations with the legendary X‑ecutioners as well as the Diggin’ in the Crates collective. Of the various figures in the red hot Argentinian rap scene\, none has shined brighter than Trueno\, the son of Uruguayan rapper Peligro and a veteran of the scene’s battle rap circuit. His early appearance on producer Bizarrap’s freestyle show BZRP Freestyle Sessions launched him to nationwide fame and helped establish the show as a chart-topping vehicle\, landing the pair at the number one spot on Argentina’s Hot 100. He’s since released several solo albums\, collaborated with the likes of Bad Gyal\, Feid\, and J Balvin\, and is responsible for one of the Argentinian rap scene’s biggest hits in 2020’s “Mamichula.” He’s joined by Milo J\, who leveraged his viral hit “Milagrosa” into collaborations with Nicki Nicole\, Duki\, and Peso Pluma; he also benefited from an appearance on Bizarrap’s YouTube series\, which led to the pair’s collaborative EP En Dormir Sin Madrid. His latest LP La Vida Era Más Corta saw him take a hard left turn into art-pop\, fusing Argentine folklore with urban and experimental sounds. Opening the show is the dynamic Dominican rapper J Noa\, a nimble-tongued MC with a rapid-fire flow who stunned the world at her NPR Tiny Desk performance\, her first outside of her own neighborhood in the Dominican Republic.

DESCRIPTION:For a century\, China Institute of America has been dedicated to deepening the world’s understanding of China. In celebration of their Centennial\, SummerStage brings two takes on the future sounds of Chinese pop to Central Park. The K-pop boy band NCT is so massive that it’s become its own ecosystem\, spinning off members into their own sub-groups that establish their own voice. WayV are the fourth such to spin off—and its first China-based collective—recording pop songs that fuse hip-hop and dance with R&B-stylized vocals sung in Mandarin since their 2019 debut EP The Vision. They’re joined by THE EITHER\, formed in New York in 2017. Their sound — Post-Orientalism — rebuilds Eastern elements for today\, blending electrified traditional instruments\, Chinese opera-inspired vocals\, progressive rock energy\, and compositions with a strong Eastern melodic identity into a bold\, future-facing performance. \n The Member RSVP Deadline for WayV (8/2) is Friday\, 7/31 @ 6pm. His R&B picnic in Central Park celebrates his birthday and this year he is bringing some R&B heavy-hitters for a not-to-be-missed throwback show. They include Jon B\, a platinum-selling R&B artist discovered by Babyface whose first three LPs climbed the Billboard 200 album chart and whose collaboration with 2Pac\, ”Are U Still Down\,” was among the late rapper’s final recordings; Fonda Rae\, an American R&B singer best known for her club hits like “Over Like a Fat Rat” and “Touch Me”; Taana Gardner\, who saw early success in disco with West End Records in the late ‘70s-early ‘80s\, and whose 1981 single “Heartbeat” was famously remixed by Larry Levan into a staple at the Paradise Garage; Strafe\, aka Brooklyn native and producer Steve Standard\, who is best known for the 1984 single “Set It Off\,” which has been extensively sampled in hip-hop\, house\, and techno circles; and Dres\, best known as one half of the duo Black Sheep\, the Native Tongues group whose debut LP A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing remains a foundation of New York City’s early ‘90s boom-bap era. His versatility as both a drummer and percussionist from small group to big band has become legendary. He’s performed and recorded with every major figure in the history of Latin jazz\, jazz\, and salsa\, with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie\, Tito Puente\, Mongo Santamaria\, Eddie Palmieri\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Candido\, Charles McPherson\, Larry Harlow\, Ruben Blades\, Celia Cruz\, and the Father of Afro-Cuban jazz\, Mario Bauzá where he was his drummer for 9 years touring and recording on his major GRAMMY nominated albums. For more than 40 years\, Charlie Aponte was the lead vocalist for the legendary El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico\, one of the island’s most successful salsa groups of all time and a salsa institution. One of his earliest performances with the band included a 1973 show in front of 50\,000 fans at Yankee Stadium as the opening act for the Fania All-Stars’ sold-out concert. With El Gran Combo\, Aponte performed all over the world\, sold millions of records\, and won multiple Latin GRAMMYs. Aponte left the group in 2014 and quickly released his debut solo album Una Nueva Historia the next year. His 2017 album Pa’ Mi Gente was nominated for the Latin GRAMMY for Best Salsa Album. He’s joined by Judy Santos\, an American singer best known for her work with the Dominican-American bachata group Aventura. She collaborated on three of their albums in the early aughts\, including the song “Obsesión\,””Angelito\,” and “La Guerra\,” her 2002 duet with Romeo Santos (no relation) that topped the charts in several Latin American countries.

The documentary tracks the life of Herman Poole Blount\, an autodidact who legally changed his name to Sun Ra. The film highlights his role as a foundational architect of Afrofuturism\, an artistic and cultural movement that blends Black history\, science fiction\, and ancient Egyptian mythology. \nKey aspects of the film include\, The Arkestra: Details his creation of the Sun Ra Arkestra\, an ever-evolving collective of dedicated musicians who lived and performed under his interstellar vision. \nVast Output: Highlights his unmatched work ethic\, producing over 1\,000 compositions and self-releasing more than 200 records as one of the first Black artists to own his own record label. \nThe Man and the Myth: Explores how his space-age mythology and costumes functioned as “liberatory technology” to empower Black identity and imagination. DESCRIPTION:Live jazz by local artists in the neighborhood green spaces where Charlie Parker lived.  \nSoulful alto saxophonist and flautist David Lee Jones was born and raised in Houston\, TX\, a city that is deeply rooted in Blues\, R&B and Soul music. He attended Texas Southern University\, then Berklee College of Music\, where he obtained a B. A. in Jazz Composition and Arranging. In 1984 David moved to New York City and began working with jazz organist Jack McDuff. In 1992 he began working with Phyllis Hyman\, playing auxiliary keyboards and saxophones\, until her death in 1995. After joining the Grammy award winning jazz / rap group Digable Planets\, he played on\, wrote and arranged all the horn arrangements for their sophomore record “Blowout Comb.” He toured with Sade on her last U.S. tour entitled “Love Deluxe.” In recent years\, David has worked with the Mingus Big Band and the Sun Ra Arkestra\, and he leads his own Organ Groove Trio in Harlem at the American Legion Post 398 every Sunday. \nSupported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York Legislature and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and by the Howard Gilman Foundation.

Night one is headlined by the acclaimed Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, under the music direction of alto saxophonist Sherman Irby\, featuring special guests Marquis Hill and Ekep Nkwelle. Special guests include Marquis Hill\, who hails from Chicago\, is one of the most exciting trumpet players working today and rising star Ekepe Nkwelle is a Cameroonian-American singer from Washington\, D.C.\, who’s already performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk and been named first runner-up at the prestigious Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Voice Competition. The first group is the Bill Saxton Harlem All-Stars\, led by Harlem native Bill Saxton. The venerated tenor saxophonist has worked with many other music greats including Bobby Watson\, Charles Tolliver\, and Tito Puente. Charlie Parker’s influence on Bill can be heard in Saxton’s bebop vocabulary\, swing\, and fluent improvisational drive!

DESCRIPTION:The Charlie Parker Jazz Festival returns to Manhattan this summer\, celebrating the spirit of the jazz icon with shows both uptown and downtown that highlight titans of jazz as well as the next generation. Night two is headlined by saxophonist Joshua Redman\, the veteran bandleader\, composer\, and son of saxophonist Dewey Redman. As a sideman\, Redman has worked with Christian McBride\, Chick Corea\, and McCoy Tyner Super Group\, among many others. Also joining the line up\, musical icon Nat Adderley Jr\, a pianist who worked closely with Luther Vandross as his music director and co-writer; he also happens to be in the lineage of composer and trumpet/cornet player Nat Adderley and alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. Also featured is Catherine Russell\, the Grammy Award-winning vocalist\, best known for her 2016 solo album Harlem on My Mind; she also spent years touring with artists including David Bowie and Steely Dan.  Opening the show is saxophonist Nicole Glover\, a rising star whose powerful tenor sound has drawn praise from jazz critics and legends alike. A member of Christian McBride’s Ursa Major and supergroup ARTEMIS\, Glover represents the next generation of artists carrying forward the jazz tradition.  Multi-talented DJ and producer of Milestones: Celebrating the Culture podcast Angélika Beener aka DJ Kultured Child is on the ones and twos.

Explore the exhibit\, meet the artists and create your own self-portrait in a free self-portrait workshop (no art experience needed) guided by artist Élan Cadiz. Presented by Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association (MMPCIA) in partnership with Heath Gallery\, NYC Parks and the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival. This project is made possible in part with funds from Creative Engagement & UMEZ Arts Engagement\, a regrant program supported by DCLA and NYSCA and administered by LMCC.
